Welcome back to Module 2, that's all focused about disability and developmental disability in healthcare. Before we jump in, it's important to note that finding data on developmental disabilities is extremely difficult, as not much research focuses solely on developmental disabilities. To compound this issue, there's not a lot of disability data itself that is open to public view in Texas. But what do we know? Well, we know that there are more than 500,000 children and adults with IDD, or Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, in the state of Texas. We also know that individuals are often on the interest list for Medicaid waivers for up to 17 years. This means that people are waiting for services for a good portion of their lifetimes. We also know that almost a third, or 33%, of students in public schools have some form of learning disability. Other developmental disability and healthcare statistics in Texas that we know is that 18% of Texas children have one or more emotional, behavioral, or developmental conditions. We also know that Texas ranks 50 out of 51 in the US in terms of access to healthcare, which means although we have a large proportion of people needing extra healthcare, getting said healthcare is a lot harder in Texas than other states. We also know that Texas ranks 49 out of 51 with regard to how well Medicaid programs serve people with developmental disabilities. And finally, we know that people with developmental disabilities are more likely to have multiple conditions and complex medical needs, which means finding specific and informed care is even harder than it would be for somebody without a disability. Concluding this, our next module covers barriers to care, including gaps in the health system and health services for people with DD.
Video Summary
The video highlights the challenges in accessing healthcare for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) in Texas. There are over 500,000 people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in the state, and lengthy waits for Medicaid waivers exacerbate service access. Nearly a third of public school students have learning disabilities, and 18% of Texas children face emotional or developmental issues. Texas ranks poorly, 50 out of 51, in healthcare access, making service attainment particularly difficult. People with DD often have complex medical needs, further complicating care access. The following module will explore barriers and gaps in healthcare services for those with DD.
