Welcome to Module 4, Accessibility Terms, where we will discuss what accessibility is and the difference between accessibility and inclusion. The first question we'll cover is what is accessibility? Well, accessibility is when a person with a disability is given the opportunity to get the same information, the same interaction, and the same services as those without a disability. Accessibility also means that everybody must be able to obtain the information as independently as possible. For example, requiring individuals with disabilities to rely on another person for the information is not considered accessible. Well, what is the difference between accessibility and inclusion? As we just discussed, accessibility is all about removing barriers. It's all about giving everyone the same opportunity to participate in programs or projects. Accessibility can also look like providing alternatives to allow access for people who need modification, also known as accommodations. However, when we're talking about inclusivity or inclusion, we're talking about creating with accessibility in mind and planning for accessible projects and programs from the start. Inclusion means including individuals with disabilities in every step of the process, not just in the practice and review of a program or project, but in the planning steps and the conception of ideas. Inclusion is all about giving individuals with a disability a seat at the metaphorical table to plan and to think about different programs. There's a video attached in this module that covers the curb cut effect, which is an idea that other accommodations, especially in physical spaces for people with disabilities, also benefits a larger public. After you watch the video, we will cover module five, which focuses on the different domains of accessibility.
Video Summary
In Module 4, "Accessibility Terms," accessibility is defined as ensuring individuals with disabilities have equal access to information, interactions, and services as those without disabilities. It's about removing barriers and providing necessary accommodations for equal participation. In contrast, inclusion involves designing with accessibility in mind from the start, integrating individuals with disabilities in planning and decision-making processes. A notable concept discussed is the "curb cut effect," where accommodations for people with disabilities benefit a broader population. The module precedes Module 5, which will delve into various domains of accessibility.
