Pdf Summary
People with disabilities can participate successfully in recreational and educational activities when accommodations and supports provide equal access. Effective planning begins by learning about each participant’s strengths, abilities, interests, and goals, then considering the activity’s physical, sensory, communication, intellectual, and social-emotional demands. Accommodations help bridge any gap between a participant’s current skills and the activity’s usual requirements. Useful accommodations include: - Communication: Use plain language, demonstrations, writing, pictures, and captions. Allow time to respond, check understanding respectfully, and ask how to use communication devices. - Sensory needs: Provide quiet spaces, sensory tools, alternative seating, movement breaks, and appropriate lighting or scents. - Vision and hearing: Offer braille or audio information, identify yourself and others, use sighted-guide techniques when appropriate, and provide sign-language interpretation or captioning. When speaking with someone who lip-reads, face them and speak clearly at a moderate pace. - Intellectual access: Give clear, concise instructions; allow processing time; divide activities into manageable steps; use visual cues; and offer peer, staff, or volunteer support. Adapt the activity or lesson as needed. To encourage inclusive group participation, facilitators can use cooperative activities that build relationships and belonging, apply universal design by offering multiple ways to engage, access information, and demonstrate understanding, and promote peer partnerships between youth with and without disabilities.
