Pdf Summary
Disability can involve physical, sensory, intellectual, developmental, or chronic conditions that affect activities and participation. People may choose whether to identify as disabled and may prefer either person-first language (such as “person with a disability”) or identity-first language (such as “disabled person”). The best approach is to ask each person about their preference and remain open to learning. Youth with disabilities participate in recreation and camps less often than their non-disabled peers, largely because opportunities are limited. Inclusive participation can benefit youth with and without disabilities. Recreation and education professionals can help by providing accommodations and support, and by adapting activities and environments to include youth with disabilities. The guide encourages professionals to use its strategies and resources to build confidence and recognize the value of this work.
